Everything you need to know about CTC, in-hand salary, and tax calculations

CTC to In-Hand Salary Calculator - Complete Guide

Understanding the difference between CTC (Cost to Company) and in-hand salary is crucial for every salaried employee in India. Our free salary calculator helps you instantly convert your CTC to take-home salary while showing every deduction clearly.

Understanding CTC Components

Your CTC typically includes multiple components: Basic Salary (usually 40-50% of CTC), House Rent Allowance (HRA - typically 40-50% of Basic), Special Allowance (variable component), Employer PF contribution (12% of Basic), Gratuity, and other benefits like insurance. Only a portion of CTC comes as monthly salary - the rest goes to PF, insurance, or is taxed.

New Tax Regime vs Old Tax Regime

From FY 2023-24, the New Tax Regime became the default for taxpayers. It offers lower tax rates but removes most exemptions like HRA, 80C, 80D, and LTA. The Old Tax Regime has higher slab rates but allows these deductions. Generally, if your deductions (HRA + 80C + 80D + others) exceed Rs 3-4 lakhs, the old regime may be beneficial. Our calculator helps you compare both regimes for your specific salary.

Key Deductions from Salary

Employee PF: 12% of Basic Salary (mandatory, goes to retirement corpus).Income Tax (TDS): Calculated based on chosen tax regime and applicable slabs.Professional Tax: State-specific tax, maximum Rs 2,500/year. These are automatically deducted from your gross salary to arrive at net in-hand amount.

Tax Saving Under Old Regime

If you opt for the Old Tax Regime, you can claim various deductions: Section 80C (up to Rs 1.5L) for PPF, ELSS, life insurance, home loan principal. Section 80D (up to Rs 25K) for health insurance premiums. HRA exemption for rent paid. Section 80CCD(1B) - additional Rs 50K for NPS. These deductions can significantly reduce your tax liability.

How to Calculate Your In-Hand Salary

The formula is straightforward: In-Hand Salary = Gross Salary - Employee PF - Income Tax - Professional Tax. However, calculating income tax requires applying correct slab rates based on your taxable income (after exemptions in old regime). Our calculator automates this entire calculation, giving you accurate results instantly.

Typical In-Hand Percentage by CTC Range

For CTC 5-10 lakhs: In-hand is typically 75-80% (low tax bracket). For CTC 10-15 lakhs: In-hand is typically 70-75%. For CTC 15-25 lakhs: In-hand is typically 65-70%. For CTC 25+ lakhs: In-hand can be 60-65% (higher tax brackets apply). Exact percentage depends on salary structure and tax planning.
